Yamashita Tomohisa’s (Yamapi) new release “I, TEXAS” edges into the top spot on the singles charts with over 126,000 sold but very close in the second spot is AKB48 member Mayu Watanabe and her debut solo release “Synchro Tokimeki” with over 123,000 sold. Landing in the third spot is T-ARA with “Roly-Poly” [release details] selling over 41,000.

On the album charts no question for number one this week with popular group Ikimonogakari’s latest album “NEWTRAL” [release details] selling over 192,000. Number two goes to the anime Fullmetal Alchemist opening/ending theme (both original series and Brotherhood) compilation album (author needs to buy that album). Rounding out the top three is voice actress/singer Minori Chihara’s album “D-Formation” [release details].

Hey! Say! JUMP and their first single release for 2012 “SUPER DELICATE” top the singles charts with a strong over 248,000 sold. Making their debut idol group Nogizaka46 with “Guru Guru Curtain” lands in second spot with 136,000 sold. The girls of SCANDAL and their long awaited single and perhaps one of the last BLEACH opening theme songs “Harukaze” ends up in 5th with almost 26,000 sold.

On the album charts the boys also take the top stop with KAT-TUN and their album “Chain” selling over 103,000 copies. AI and her first album in over 2 years “INDEPENDENT” edges into the second spot with over 20,000 sold. The album includes the theme song for anime movie Berserk – “Utsukushikimono”. Seiyuu/singer Yui Horie is a close 3rd with “Himitsu” and close to 19,000 sold.

AKB48 breaks the 1 million sold mark again topping the Oricon weekly singles charts with “GIVE ME FIVE!”. The single sold 1,287,217 making it their 6th consecutive single to sell over 1 million copies. With this single AKB48 tops the record books with most consecutive 1 million selling singles with 6 (Pink Lady 5) and #1 singles with 12 (Morning Musume 11).

On the album charts Tokyo Jihen and their final compilation album “Tokyo Collection” tops with 36,004 copies sold. Landing in the 2nd spot selling 33,290 copies is Chatmonchy with their compilation album “Chatmonchy BEST 2005-2011”.

AKB48 revealed “GIVE ME FIVE!” during an encore of their “AKB48 Request Hour Set List Best 100 2012” performance on January 22nd. In savvy marketing typical of AKB48 they have formed a special idol group under the name “Baby Blossom” just for the new single. Its members will be all 18 senbatsu members with the lead instruments handled by, Maeda Atsuko (RG), Takahashi Minami (LG), Oshima Yuko (B), Kojima Haruna (Syn), Watanabe Mayu (Key), and Kashiwagi Yuki (Dr).
