Dominating the weekly single charts for March 14th is super group Arashi and their single “Wild at Heart” selling just over 550,000 copies (release details). SDN48 and their final single “Makeoshimi Congratulations” edged into second spot with over 74,000 copies sold (release details). They just beat out J Soul Brothers and their single “Go my way” which sold over 68,000 copies (release details). Over all it was a strong week of new singles with only one single, last week’s #1 from Yamapi holding the number ten spot this week, otherwise all other singles are new releases.

On the album charts last weeks number one remains in the top spot this week – popular group Ikimonogakari’s and their album “NEWTRAL” (release details) selling another 83,000. Not far back in the number two spot is Jin Akanishi’s newest album “JAPONICANA” with over 69,000 sold (release details). Also making a strong showing is the girls from SCANDAL and their new album “SHOW” (release details).

The charts for December 2011 are dominated by another 1+ million selling single by AKB48 with their “Uekara Mariko” selling a huge 1,273,748 and putting it nearly 1 million ahead of the second place single. The rest of the top 5 singles is dominated by boy groups with Kis-My-Ft2, KAT-TUN, Tohoshiniki, and SMAP landing in the 2nd through 5th spots.

On the album side EXILE with album that includes member ATSUSHI’s solo debut “EXILE JAPAN/ Solo” takes the #1 spot with 350,277 sold. This album dropped on January 1st 2012 which was included in the last chart of the 2011 and they sold another 150,000+ the first week of January. In the #2 spot is Perfume and their album “JPN” just ahead of KARA’s consistent charting album “Super Girl” (charted for 6 weeks in the top 7).

OriconAKB48’s newest single, “Ue kara Mariko” sold over 1 million copies making AKB48 the first group ever to have 4 consecutive first week million selling singles. They are tied now with rock band GLAY with 5 consecutive million selling singles (their first single of the year took more than a week to reach the milestone). And they now have a total of 6 million selling singings which has puts them past other top female artists such as Namie Amuro, Ayumi Hamasaki and Utada Hikaru. Expect AKB48 to continue to re-write the records.

Of course the important news is Ho-Kago Tea Time having two singles on the charts this week (not the first time for this fictional band). The K-ON! movie opening theme song “Unmei♪wa♪Endless!” at #5 and ending theme song “Singing!” at #4 sung by the character seiyuu’s in the fictional band Ho-Kago Tea Time. The K-ON! movie opened December 3rd and has so far had very strong two weekends at the box office (#2 and #4).

On the album charts Jin Akanishi’s American debut album, “TEST DRIVE featuring Jason Derulo” topped the charts and in second is Sandaime J Soul Brothers with their album “TRIBAL SOUL.

OriconA strong month for powerhouses Arashi (#1 single, #7 album), AKB48 (#7 single) and its sister group SKE48 (#2 single) and subgroups Not Yet (#4 single), French Kiss (#5 single), and Johnny’s Entertainment groups Sexy Zone (#3 single) and Kanjani8 (#2 album) on the monthly charts.

KARA – perhaps the hottest female idol group out of Korea these days managed to top the album charts with their release “Super Girl”. Two real ‘super girls’ – YUI was #3 on the album charts and singer/voice actress Nana Mizuki was #6.

SKE48 easily took top honors last week on the singles charts with the release of their newest single, “OkiDoki” selling over 380,000 copies. On the album charts, KinKi Kids album “K Album” sold 151,000 copies to land in the top position.

In the other top singles slots – J Soul Brothers (3rd generation) single “Refrain” landing in the number two spot,e Arashi’s single “Meikyu Love Song” released the previous week held strong in the third spot, Kana Nishino newest release “Tatoe Donna ni…” was 5th, and new theme song “CHANGE !!!” for anime “Idolm@ster” sung by the voice cast hit number 6 on the chart.

On the album charts staying strong for the second week YUI slid only one spot into second position with her release “HOW CRAZY YOUR LOVE” and Maaya Sakamoto album release “Driving in the silence” landed number 3. For Sakamoto it was her 3rd release in the past 5 weeks having charted with 2 previous single releases..
