
The single charts are topped this week by Sexy Zone and their second single “Lady Diamond” – (release details) – selling over 115,000 copies. Not as big a seller as their first single that topped the charts with over 300,000 copies sold but another #1 single for this shonen group. Second spot goes to the girls of Perfume with “Spring of Life” – (release details) – selling almost 94,000 copies. And rounding out the top three is veteran idol group (that’s gotten much younger) Morning Musume with “Renai Hunter” – (release details) – the single will be current leader and last from the 5th generation (2001) Niigaki Risa’s final with the group as she nears graduation.
On the album charts half of group KinKi Kids Tsuyoshi Domoto with his first solo album in over three years “Shamanippon ~Rakachinotohi~” selling over 72,000. In second lands one of our featured releases – the middle school duo of ClariS and their first album “BIRTHDAY” – (release details) – selling over 52,000 copies.

Perfume has a new single “Spring of Life” set for release on April 11th. The title track is being used as the CM song for promotion of drink ‘KIRIN Chu-Hi Hyouketsu’ with edited title of “Hyouketsu MAGICAL MUSIC”. The single will come in 2 editions, a Limited with bonus DVD and a Regular CD only edition. The track list isn’t official yet but besides the title track there will be 3 additional songs for 4 track total. First Press editions will add a bonus poster but supplies are quite limited. Broadcaster NHK has announced a public live program, “One year from the Earthquake, ‘Ashita e’ Concert” as a milestone to the eastern Japan earthquake. The event will be on March 10th 2012 which marks the one year anniversary. AKB48’s newest single, “Ue kara Mariko” sold over 1 million copies making AKB48 the first group ever to have 4 consecutive first week million selling singles. They are tied now with rock band GLAY with 5 consecutive million selling singles (their first single of the year took more than a week to reach the milestone). And they now have a total of 6 million selling singings which has puts them past other top female artists such as Namie Amuro, Ayumi Hamasaki and Utada Hikaru. Expect AKB48 to continue to re-write the records.
Of course the important news is Ho-Kago Tea Time having two singles on the charts this week (not the first time for this fictional band). The K-ON! movie opening theme song “Unmei♪wa♪Endless!” at #5 and ending theme song “Singing!” at #4 sung by the character seiyuu’s in the fictional band Ho-Kago Tea Time. The K-ON! movie opened December 3rd and has so far had very strong two weekends at the box office (#2 and #4).
On the album charts Jin Akanishi’s American debut album, “TEST DRIVE featuring Jason Derulo” topped the charts and in second is Sandaime J Soul Brothers with their album “TRIBAL SOUL.”

For the second week ten new singles have hit the Oricon weekly charts and the boys from KAT-TUN are on top with their 17th consecutive #1 single “BIRTH.” Korean mega-duet Tohoshinki (TVXQ) in a strong second spot with their winter ballad “Winter Rose.” No weekly chart these days can exist without an AKB48 or spinoff group – this week its subunit Watarirouka Hashiritai 7 and their 9th single “Kibou Sanmyaku”
Sliding in at the #10 spot is GACKT with “Graffiti” which is featured as the current opening theme song for anime SKET DANCE.

A strong month for powerhouses Arashi (#1 single, #7 album), AKB48 (#7 single) and its sister group SKE48 (#2 single) and subgroups Not Yet (#4 single), French Kiss (#5 single), and Johnny’s Entertainment groups Sexy Zone (#3 single) and Kanjani8 (#2 album) on the monthly charts.
KARA – perhaps the hottest female idol group out of Korea these days managed to top the album charts with their release “Super Girl”. Two real ‘super girls’ – YUI was #3 on the album charts and singer/voice actress Nana Mizuki was #6.
