
The single charts for the week of May 2nd are topped by SMAP with their 47th single “Sakasama no Sora” selling over 135,000 copies. The single is a collaboration is famous composer Yoko Kanno and is featured on the TV drama “Ume-chan Sensei”. Landing in the second spot is solo release by AKB48 member Tomomi Itano with 72,000 copies sold. Seiyuu group Sphere and their single “Non stop road / Ashita e no Kaerimichi” that features the opening and ending theme to the anime “Natsuiro Kiseki” developed specifically for the group of singers/seiyuus hits the #6 spot on the charts.
On the album charts its Yuzu topping with a compilation album “YUZU YOU [2006-2011]” with nearly 150,000 copies sold. In the second spot is Hilcrhyme with the Gold version of their best hits release “Best of Hilcrhyme ~GOLD~” selling 18,000 copies. Their Silver version “Best of Hilcrhyme ~SILVER~” also charted in the #7 spot with over 15,000 copies sold (release details).

Broadcaster NHK has announced a public live program, “One year from the Earthquake, ‘Ashita e’ Concert” as a milestone to the eastern Japan earthquake. The event will be on March 10th 2012 which marks the one year anniversary. The charts for December 2011 are dominated by another 1+ million selling single by AKB48 with their “Uekara Mariko” selling a huge 1,273,748 and putting it nearly 1 million ahead of the second place single. The rest of the top 5 singles is dominated by boy groups with Kis-My-Ft2, KAT-TUN, Tohoshiniki, and SMAP landing in the 2nd through 5th spots.
On the album side EXILE with album that includes member ATSUSHI’s solo debut “EXILE JAPAN/ Solo” takes the #1 spot with 350,277 sold. This album dropped on January 1st 2012 which was included in the last chart of the 2011 and they sold another 150,000+ the first week of January. In the #2 spot is Perfume and their album “JPN” just ahead of KARA’s consistent charting album “Super Girl” (charted for 6 weeks in the top 7).

SMAP tops the singles charts with “Boku no Hanbun”, their 13th consecutive number 1 single. Second spot goes to L’Arc~en~Ciel and their 39th single “CHASE” which is also featured as the theme song for the movie “Wild 7.” Acid Black Cherry hits the number 3 spot with their 4th release of a 5 consecutive release project, “CRISIS.”
On the album charts FUNKY MONKEY BABYS newest “FUNKY MONKEY BABYS 4” easily took top honors. In the 2nd-5th spots are 4 best-of albums from Ketsumeishi which were released simultaneously. No other artist has filled 4 of the top 5 spots at the same time on the album charts.

Twenty years of SMAP! SMAP celebrated their 20th anniversary on September 9th at Seibuen Amusement Park in Saitama along with 10,000 fans.
20 years ago on that day they debuted the single, “Can’t Stop!! -LOVING-“, at their first event at this same amusement park. Member Kimura Takuya (38) expressed, “We’ve returned to the beginning. I am excited for our next step.” [more after jump]

Japanese pop group SMAP kicked off an international tour, their first in two years, on Wednesday night at Tokyo Dome. Including those in attendance that night, the performance marked a milestone for the group – 10 million total concert attendees since the group’s founding. This is also the highest number ever recorded for any Japanese artist.
A jumbo screen behind the performers showed past live shows and messages of gratitude to fans. The Tokyo Dome performance drew a crowd of 50,000.
The band also debuted a new song at the show, “Can’t Stop!! –Loving- “. The 3 1/2-hour performance featured about 50 songs, both new and old.
On Oct 9-10, SMAP will continue the tour with their first-ever visit to Shanghai
