NTV’s special charity program “24 Hour Television” announced that, as of noon on March 16, it has raised roughly 254 million yen towards relief for the victims of last week’s earthquake and tsunami, with participation from more than 55,000 donors. The special fund was launched on March 12, the day after the earthquake.

“24 Hour Television” generally holds its annual 24-hour charity program in late August, but the organization behind is also active during the rest of the year. Since starting in 1978, the special program has been held 33 times, raising a total of 29.1 billion yen over the years.

In response to the disasters in northeastern Japan, it opened a special fund to collect donations for relief efforts, and by 11:00am on March 15, it had raised 157 million yen from over 35,000 people. Within the next 25 hours, 20,000 more people contributed to the fund, giving close to an additional 100 million yen
